Caetano Veloso has often been called the "Bob Dylan of Brazil" and for good reason. He is among several influential singer-songwriters in the South American nation, including Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, who got their start in the early 1960s, guided by the pioneering work of 1950s Brazilian superstar Joao Gilberto.

Veloso became a founding member of Brazil's eclectic and somewhat political tropicalismo pop music movement in the late 1960s. As he has matured as an artist, Veloso has not slowed down, continuing to embrace and incorporate a wide range of musical elements while keeping true to his Brazilian roots.

David Byrne is mainly known as a co-founder of the group Talking Heads. After the group disbanded in the late 1980s, Byrne broadly expanded his musical horizons, launching the Luaka Bop label in 1990 and focusing world music.
