For more than 30 years, the gospel ensemble Sounds of Blackness has been making music with a message. They won a Grammy for their album The Evolution of Gospel. Now they're launching a new music campaign to educate people about street and domestic violence.
Sounds of Blackness opened for the Jackson 5 and played at the White House. Their new record, Kings and Queens, shows the group taking on some serious social problems with their trademark class and fearless mixing of genres.
Gary Hines is the musical director for Sounds of Blackness, and he and soloist Patty Lacy spoke to Tony Cox about the difference between performing in church and on stage, and Gary's turn as Mr. Minnesota.
