Local Pride

The Cortland Main Street Music Series continues its 2019 season in downtown Cortland. This week’s edition will feature a longtime regional favorite, Syracuse’s Todd Hobin Band, joined by local bands The Cousins and The Beauchesnes.

On The Waterfront

Triphammer Arts, the Cayuga Waterfront Trail Initiative and the Friends of Stewart Park will once again host “Watermusic/Dancing on the Trail.” The event will feature musicians performing along the Waterfront Trail and the borders of Cayuga Lake and Fall Creek at 5:30-7:30 p.m., with a Grand Finale performance at Stewart Park’s Picnic (Large) Pavilion at 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Drivin’ In

Road Man – the reggae-rock-funk band led by ex-John Brown’s Body keyboardist Jon Petronzio – will continue the Cornell Summer Session Concert Series. Petronzio will be joined by his full band: guitarist Ryan Vanderhoof, drummer Greg Evans, bassist Hayden Frank, horn players Jack Storer and Mark Wienand Karlsen, and percussionist Bryan Davis to play songs from his two albums, including 2018’s excellent “Midnight Hour.”

Old Fox
Old Fox treks in from Boston to perform at the Range Friday night.

Welcome Return

Ex-Viva Mayhem drummer Sean Wolf Bonney-Burrill returns from Boston with his new band Old Fox to share a gig with his old band in downtown Ithaca. Old Fox, a draws inspiration from Bon Iver, Frightened Rabbit and Hozier, while Viva Mayhem blends rock, ska, and more into its high-energy sound.

Mucho Metal

The Haunt will host a pair of heavy shows this weekend. Friday, the “Metallic Onslaught” show will present a multi-band bill featuring Ire Clad, Murder in Rue Morgue, Mobday, Pollack, Threatpoint, and Bound and Quartered. Saturday, Atlanta metalcore band Issues will perform, along with regional acts Coasting on Potential and Desolate.

City Limits returns to Stella's Barn Saturday night.

Blues Blasters

City Limits returns with its fiery blues-rock sound, putting its stamp on a variety of classic and modern tunes. The band of Andy Lockwood, Lisa Bloom, Danny Paolangeli, and Glenn Porter is backed by a full horn section.

The Ripcords come to Trax at Greek Peak on Saturday night.

Let It Rip

The Ripcords – one of Syracuse’s top roots-rock bands – will trek down Route 81 for a show in the hills outside of Cortland. Led by singer-guitarists Rex Lyons and Irv Lyons Jr., the group draws on rockabilly, country, blues, swing, and music influenced by New Orleans, Bakersfield and more.

Growing GrassRoots

Head to Trumansburg for a screening of “A Beautiful Feeling,” a new documentary about the GrassRoots Festival. Produced and directed by Michael O’Connell of Haw River Films (he also did 2004’s “GrassRoots Stages” doc), the film covers GrassRoots organizers as they strive to create a festival for each season by adding additional events in North Carolina and Miami to the original summer festival in Trumansburg. Interviews and live performances, along with archival 16mm footage, are used as sources for the film.

Ronnie James Dio

Stand Up and Shout

Dio Day, the biennial benefit show held in memory of legendary hard rock singer and Cortland native Ronnie James Dio, will return this weekend. Born July 10, 1942, Dio passed away from stomach cancer in 2010 after decades of playing in bands such as Elf, Rainbow, Dio, Black Sabbath and Heaven and Hell. This year’s event will take at Night Owls in Polkville, and will feature several local bands.:  Sydney Irving, The Essentials, Tailor-Made, Austin/ Schell, Band of Doom: A Tribute to Black Sabbath, Pull, and Ten Man Push. Proceeds will go to three good causes: the Ronnie James Dio Music Scholarship Fund, the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, and the Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. There also will be a Ride for Dio motorcycle run leaving from Argyle’s Easy Street Tavern at 11 a.m.

Stepping Out

Stark Nights Sunday Sessions continues its weekly residency, with keyboardist Michael Stark joined by Eric Harvey, the local singer-songwriter who played with indie-rockers Spoon for many years. (He opened for and played with them at the State Theatre a few years ago). They’ll both play short solo sets to open the night, then Stark, Matthew Saccuccimorano, Jason Shegogue, Michael Stark, and Brian Dozoretz will join Harvey for a full band set.

North Carolina's Hoot and Holler perform on Bound for Glory Sunday night.

Roots Duo

Bound for Glory continues its summer season by welcoming North Carolina-based Hoot and Holler to North America’s longest-running live folk music concert broadcast. The duo of Mark Kilianski and Amy Alvey will play three sets that will showcase their blend of mountain and roots music on fiddle, banjo, guitar and vocals.

Miss Tess will bring her band the Talkbacks to perform at the GrassRoots Culture Camp on Sunday night.

Kicking Off Culture Camp

The fourth annual GrassRoots Culture Camp will host the first of its four nightly dances, with Miss Tess and the Talkbacks bringing their high-energy honky-tonk sound from Nashville. They’ll be joined be a variety of guests from the GrassRoots family, including Feufollet’s Kelli Jones, ex-Stray Birds fiddler Oliver Bates Craven and Western Centuries guitarist Jim Miller.
