For a holiday weekend, there sure are a lot of cool shows on tap in and around Ithaca. Let’s take a look.

Deep Grooves

Fronted by ex-John Brown’s Body singer Elliot Martin, the Black Castle features some of Ithaca’s top players (Brian Wilson, Matt Saccuccimorano, Brian Dozoretz, Shikhar Bajracharya, Nate Richardson); they’ve been working up some new material in recent months. Lucas Ashby’s Brain Trust – the new project from the Big Mean Sound Machine percussionist – will open the 9 p.m. show. Cover is $15.

David Rosales
David Rosales brings his band from California to Ithaca

California Dreaming

David Rosales and His Band of Scoundrels will make their Ithaca debut; the Los Angeles-based roots band was described by popMatters as “invoking elements of R&B, gospel, rock, and western influences to dust things up with a helping of soulful grit,” and lauded Rosales for “the sheer versatility of his compositions that set him head and shoulders above many breaking into the business today.”

Bubba Crumrine

Sonic Sensations

Bubba Crumrine, a key player in the local music scene for more than a decade (mainly through his work with Ithaca Underground), will release a solo EP, “How Brightly Can You Burn? (The Death of Youth),” which employs synthesizers, washboard, bells, chains, voice, and a metal chair on compositions that touch on ambient, industrial, new and old influences. Also on the bill are SMAXKULT, the multi-instrumentalist who just appeared at Naked Noise #10, and Piyawat Louilarpprasert, the Bangkok native who combines sonic and visual arts, unusual instrumentation and traditional Thai music influences on his original compositions.

Fleet Fingers

Known for his two-handed percussive style, Preston Reed combines rhythms, chord and melodies into a cohesive sound – one that draws inspiration from blues, rock, metal, funk, jazz and classical influences. (Reed also will conduct a workshop at 3-5 p.m. Saturday; admission is $30 at the door.)

Ready for Release

Ithaca’s ¡Viva Mayhem! will be unveiling its latest EP, “Love Me Still,” which has six new songs that blend ska, rock and other influences. Also on the bill are Ithaca roots-rockers Kitestring, who will be releasing their second album this summer, and Seth Faergolzia's Multibird, the latest project from the Rochester frontman who has led several quirky bands over the years.

Dead Reckoning

Box of Rain will bring its Grateful Dead tribute show to Ithaca Focusing on the band’s fertile 1968-1974 era – when Ron “Pigpen” McKernan’s vocals, keyboards, harmonica and percussion played a key role in the Dead’s sound – Box of Rain features current and former members of Dark Star Orchestra, Zen Tricksters, Living Earth, Boris Garcia and Dead On Live. F

It Might Get Loud

Ithaca alt-rock bands Spazzare, Chimes of Bayonets, and Moon Landing (formerly known as We, Himself) will join forces for a night of heavy psychedelic rock.

Fine Folk

Joe Crookston is one of Ithaca’s most popular singer-songwriters, but he rarely plays here in town because he’s always traveling around the country. Catch him at this week’s Bound for Glory, a free all-ages show in Cornell’s Anabel Taylor Hall.
