Senses Working Overtime
Cornell Cinema will screen “32 Sounds,” an immersive feature documentary and profound sensory experience from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sam Green (“The Weather Underground,” “A Thousand Thoughts”) featuring original music by JD Samson (Le Tigre, MEN).

Filmmaker Sam Green takes the audience on a journey through time and space —exploring everything from forgotten childhood memories, to the soundtrack of resistance, to subaquatic symphonies —and experience in new ways the astonishing sounds of our everyday lives. ‘32 Sounds’ investigates the mysterious nature of perception and the subtle yet radical politics that arise from sensation and being present in one’s body.

All in the Family
The Beacon on Aurora Concert Series continues its season with Rachael Kilgour.
“Rachael Kilgour's exquisite fourth full-length collection, ‘My Father Loved Me,’ is a tribute to her late father, produced by JUNO Award-winning songwriter Rose Cousins and recorded in the senior Kilgour's native Canada. In the spare, often gutting language for which she is known, Kilgour gives us a complex portrait of a man as seen through his daughter's eyes. With unwavering acuity she poses questions about identity, inheritance, and grief, and affirms the value of one ordinary working man's life to an often indifferent world.
“Like her father, Kilgour is a hard worker. She comes by her considerable skills honestly, honing her craft over the past decade in listening rooms, festivals, concert halls, and recording studios, and picking up accolades along the way. Kilgour first attained notoriety outside her native Duluth, MN as the grand prize winner of the 2015 international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest. She has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and at the Sundance Film Festival. Her oft-noted “unapologetic lyrics” (Rolling Stone) and “master crafted indie folk” sensibilities (Billboard) are on full display in this latest collection of songs.”

Life of Perfection
Denva Gallant, assistant professor of art history at Rice University (who will narrate a work on the March 24 concert), gives a lecture, “Illustrating the Vitae patrum: Understanding Eremitic Denial in Fourteenth-Century Italy.” In the late third and fourth centuries, a number of men and women from Egypt, Palestine, and Syria chose to make a daring break with society, renouncing their familial claims and wealth so that they could lead a life of perfection in the desert. By withdrawing from society to the desert to undergo the ultimate test of faith, these men and women, known to later generations as the Desert Fathers and Mothers, committed themselves to sacrifice, to an exclusive reliance on God, and to the letting-go of ego. Their lives became legends that resonated across the centuries to come.”
