The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers (DCJS) will stream a free holiday concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19. The concert will feature the world premiere of “A Renewed America” in honor of the late U.S. Representative from Georgia, John Lewis. Ithaca College Professor of Voice, baritone Sidney Outlaw will be the soloist. DCJS also preview some songs from their upcoming March concert at Carnegie Hall with the Fisk Jubilee Singers, songs of good cheer from the season and several spirituals and gospel selections featuring the incomparabl Maria Ellis-Jordan.   The DCJS, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, Ithaca-based organization of dozens of community singers, as well as more than a dozen Ithaca College music majors, is dedicated to preserving the Negro Spiritual and its themes of sorrow, despair, and hope to promote racial healing and social justice. The group, led by Founding Director Dr. Baruch Whitehead, Associate Professor of Music Education at Ithaca College, is named in honor of the late Ithaca resident Dorothy Cotton, the civil rights pioneer who served as education director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She often delivered her messages of freedom and hope through music.
