Symphoria, the Orchestra of Central New York, features pianist Jon Nakamatsu in a program led by Lawrence Loh. Symphoria returns to Geneva with pianist Jon Nakamatsu in a concert with unexpected links to American music. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor raises the curtain for this concert, with his Ballade in A-minor. Coleridge-Taylor made three tours of the United States during his lifetime, and his inclusion in the program serves to reinforce the orchestra’s commitment to truly diverse programming. Mr. Nakamatsu will perform Maurice Ravel’s clever Piano Concerto in G-major. During a four month tour of the United States, Ravel became more enamored with the jazz aesthetic, and worked jazz idioms into much of his later music, including this piano concerto. Sergei Rachmaninoff, while most famous for his work as a pianist, continues to enjoy a posthumously growing reputation as a composer. The 1917 Revolution led Rachmaninoff to seek his fortunes beyond Russia, and he eventually landed in the United States, where he lived for the rest of his life. He developed a particular fondness for the Philadelphia Orchestra, growing to especially love their famed string section. His Symphony No.3 will conclude this program.
