Ithaca’s newest venue, Deep Dive, celebrates its grand opening on Friday night, while the Ithaca Night Bazaar closes out its debut season on Thursday. Night Moves
The Ithaca Night Bazaar closes out its inaugural season with its final event at the Ithaca Farmers Market Pavilion. The lineup features local funk favorites The Comb Down; MJT, a trio of brothers from Long Island who blend jazz and rock influences; and Cold Sugar, an NYC duo that describes itself as “space babies playing rock n roll.” There also will be performances by Parlor City Burlesque, and a variety of food, beverage, and craft vendors.

Lipp Service
Aaron Lipp returns to South Hill Cider. A native of Naples, New York, and a master of many instruments – guitar, fiddle, Hammond B3 organ – and styles – old-time, bluegrass, rockabilly, country, gospel – Lipp is a familiar face to upstate music fans through a variety of projects and collaborations in recent years. Summer Vibes
The Downtown Ithaca Summer Concert Series concludes with Maddy Walsh, who will showcase the all-star band she put together last year to perform and promote her two 2021 solo albums, “Tunnel Sessions” and “Humanmade Thing.” She’ll be joined by Samuel B. Lupowitz (keyboards), Michael Wu (bass), Michael Caporizzo (guitar), Sam Fishman (drums), Bronwen Exter and Jennifer Middaugh (vocals), and Mike Suave (guitar)

Percussive Power
The Cornell Department of Music and the Cornell Contemporary Chamber Players welcome experimental percussionist Greg Stuart for two concerts on campus. The performances are part of a week-long residency in which Stuart will work with Cornell composition doctoral students. The first concert on Monday featured pieces by Sarah Hennies and Michael Pisaro-Liu. The second concert on Thursday, Sept. 15, will be the culmination of the residency, presenting pieces by Cornell composers John Eagle, Josh Biggs, Han Xu, Laura Cetilia, Michele Cheng, and María Bulla. Stuart is a percussionist whose work draws upon a mixture of music from the experimental tradition, Wandelweiser, improvisation, and electronics. His performances have been described as “a ghostly, gorgeous lesson in how close, concentrated listening can alter and enhance perception” (The New York Times).

We All Scream
So Good Ice Cream Stand and the Center for the Arts of Homer have teamed up to bring you the So Good Music Series every Thursday through September. This week’s edition features Rick Starmer, the Cortland native and pianist who has played everything from rock to new wave to jazz during his long career. So Good will feature “adult only” specialty ice cream for those 21 and up. Bring a chair or two to enjoy the show.

Miami Sound Machine
Afrobeta plays the official after-party for the Ithaca Night Bazaar. “Miami duo Afrobeta has been tearing up dance floors in their hometown since 2006. Formed by lyricist/vocalist Cuci Amador and synth-centric producer/arranger Smurphio, their mutual love of catchy songwriting, Cuban pastries, and dancing til' 5 AM, is what initially inspired them to make music together. They’ve toured internationally, performing at some of the largest music festivals and venues in the world including Glastonbury, Space Ibiza, Burning Man, Ultra Music Festival editions in Miami, South Korea and Brazil, Camp Bisco, and Identity Festival.”

Deep Grooves

Ready for Release
Not From Wisconsin will celebrate the release of its third full-length album, “Enough to a Degree,” which “runs the gamut from angular indie rock to somber slowcore with everything in between and sometimes all within a single song. The songs were recorded live in the studio with minimal overdubbing, capturing NFW’s unique qualities and intricate minimalist arrangements.” The self-produced album was recorded at The Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, New York, by Paul Antonell and Shubham Mondal over four days in the Spring of 2019 and mastered by Phil Abbott in Brooklyn. Country singer Jon Pardi brings his “Ain’t Always the Cowboy Tour” to the Southern Tier, where he’ll be joined by Lainey Wilson and Hailey Whitters. ‘Bach & Forth’
The Cornell Department of Music welcomes guest pianist Stephen Prutsman for a recital titled “Bach & Forth.” “Using J.S. Bach as a reference point and juxtaposing his own arrangements with works by other major classical composers, as well as with jazz greats such as Charlie Parker (and perhaps an Uzbek folk song), the program will offer the audience a fresh approach in hearing both the music of Bach and of the selection of composers spanning hundreds of years from all over the world. “Prutsman has been described as one of the most innovative musicians of his time. Moving easily from classical to jazz to world music styles as a pianist, composer, and conductor, Prutsman continues to explore and seek common ground and relationships in the music of all cultures and languages. As a composer, Stephen’s long collaboration with the Grammy Award-winning Kronos Quartet has resulted in over 40 arrangements and compositions for them. As a pianist or arranger outside of the classical music world he has collaborated with such diverse personalities as Tom Waits, Rokia Traore, Joshua Redman, Jon Anderson of Yes, Sigur Rós, and Asha Bhosle.”

Grand Opening
Deep Dive celebrates its grand opening with the help of Double Tiger, the reggae-dub-soul project of Jay Spaker, who’s released two albums since 2017, including 2020’s “The Journey.” He’ll be joined by some local luminaries in the latest iteration of the band. Sprouting Again
“After going dormant in 2020 and 2021, Seedstock is back for its 12th year! New Vine Records’ annual Off The Vine Festival returns, ready to showcase some of Ithaca’s top musical acts. L.A.-based indie rockers Dawes and Canadian folk-pop artist Bahamas (aka Afie Jurvanen) have joined forces for their current tour – literally. “This tour is Dawes & Bahamas collaborating all night long at every show. Dawes will back Bahamas during his set each night, and Bahamas will join Dawes for their set each night. There won’t be a support act. We’re presenting an evening of Dawes and Bahamas music in an alternative, never before seen or heard performance. There will be two sets separated by an intermission each night. We hope you join us.”

Shining Through
Shinedown brings its “Planet Zero Worldwide Tour” to upstate New York to promote its latest album. Good Times Roll
Cornell Concert Series will welcome three-time Grammy nominee Sean Ardoin, who has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The Ardoin name is one of the most revered in Creole and zydeco music. “A rare combination of tradition, talent, and creativity, Sean started a new genre called ‘Kreole Rock and Soul’ in order to be able to express his artistry while expanding the traditional zydeco idiom.” Find out more here.

Fabi’s Electropicalia will feature the Miami electro-world musician Fabi and special guests SensE and Martini. The ElectroZone presents another cool show, as Atlanta's CHEW comes to Ithaca to promote its latest album, “Horses.”

Grammy and Americana-award-winning singer-songwriter and virtuoso violinist Amanda Shires returns to Central New York to spotlight her latest album, “Take It Like A Man,” which exhibits a maturing songwriting style honed during the pandemic. Englishmen in New York
“That Awful Man and His Manager: Robert Fripp and David Singleton” features “An Evening of Talking” between guitarist Robert Fripp – founding member of King Crimson and collaborator with Brian Eno, David Bowie, Daryl Hall, David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, Toyah Willcox, and other – and Singleton, who established DGM with Fripp in 1993 and “has reluctantly managed King Crimson since 2018”; he’s also King Crimson's producer and author of “The Vicar Chronicles.”
About the event: “An endless stream of people ask Fripp burning questions, many of which are actually not even quite smoldering. In most cases they would be better answered by David Singleton. Headbanger’s Ball

Bring the Noise
Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Among The Rocks and Roots bring their heavy, indigenous music to Ithaca for the first time. “To simply call Among The Rocks and Roots a noise rock duo would be a lazy assessment of the band’s sound. Certainly there is a noise rock element present but the duo stir in elements of world music, shoegaze, black metal and the avant garde to create a sonic force that is wholly unique to the experimental community. Operating as a unit since 2014 New York’s Abdul Hakim Bilal and Richmond, VA’s Samuel Goff have built a reputation of cathartic, emotional, LOUD and intense live performances to supplement their recordings.” Jen Kutler and Gravestone Glue will open the show.
