That German Sound
Cornell’s Midday Music for Organ continues with Nathan Mondry, who will present “The English-German Pipeline.” “The British Isles, invaded by Anglo-Saxons well before William the Conqueror, have been variously influenced and re-influenced not only by German rulers, but musicians; George I brought Handel with him upon ascension of the British crown, and 100 years later Queen Victoria encouraged musical visits from Felix Mendelssohn. The program features organ works by these composers as well as a new chorale partita.”

Turtles All the Way Down
Hailing from Minnesota, Trampled by Turtles will make their Ithaca debut at the State Theatre. The sextet is touring to promote its just-released album, “Alpenglow, which was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and includes 11 new songs that showcase the group’s signature blend of rock, folk, punk, country, and progressive bluegrass. Amigo the Devil, the project of Austin-based songwriter Danny Kiranos, will open the show; he “has somehow managed to meld the worlds (and fanbases) of traditional folk, country music, rock, and metal into one.”

Tenzin Chopak and Emmett Scott will perform an intimate live concert recording in Hector. “With Grammy-winning sound engineer Brian Dozoretz, and hosted by the wonderful folks at Red Newt in a gorgeous wood-floored room with high ceilings and an exquisite grand piano, this will be a powerfully moving night of original world-class music. A Thing for Strings

Ready for Release

The Rollin’ Rust, the Cortland-based roots-rock band that recently released its debut album, “Road Rats,” will open the show.

Tower of Song
Cornell Cinema will screen “Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song.” Directed by Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine, the film is a “definitive exploration of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen as seen through the prism of his internationally renowned hymn, ‘Hallelujah.’ This feature-length documentary weaves together three creative strands: The songwriter and his times; the song’s dramatic journey from record label reject to chart-topping hit, and moving testimonies from major recording artists for whom ‘Hallelujah’ has become a personal touchstone. Paying Tribute
Cortland Repertory Theatre Downtown will present two tribute concerts this weekend. “One Voice: The Music of Barry Manilow” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, followed by “Tapestry Unraveled: The Music of Carole King” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Going Underground
Local guitarist-composer Ryan Vanderhoof will kick off a two-week residency at the Downstairs. This week, he’ll reunite The Long Now, an instrumental trio in which he’s joined by bassist Brian Dozoretz and drummer Matt Saccuccimorano as well as some special guests. Next week will feature Broken Down Barns, his songwriting vehicle in which he’s joined by Chris Ploss and Eric Harvey.

Czech Mates
The Cornell Concert Series welcomes the Smetana Trio, today’s foremost Czech chamber ensemble, to Ithaca. Founded in 1934, the Smetana Trio advances the interpretational ideals created by its illustrious predecessors. Comprising violinist Jan Talich, cellist Jan Pálenícek, and pianist Jitka Cechová, the trio will present a program of Martinů, Rachmaninoff, and Smetana; their energy, emotional range, and flawless technique “ensures that the listener is completely involved in the drama from first bar to last.”

Local Cajun-Americana dance band Rose and the Bros will play Deep Dive. Juice on the Loose
Boston-bred, Brooklyn-based sextet Juice returns to Ithaca after three years, ready to showcase its energetic blend of rock, pop, hiphop, and R&B. Crossing Borders
The Cornell Wind Symphony, conducted by James Spinazzola, welcomes Ukrainian-Australian composer Catherine Likhuta for a world premiere performance. Cinematic Collaboration
The Cornell Contemporary Chamber Players in conjunction with Cornell Cinema welcome Brooklyn-based percussion duo NOMON (Shayna and Nava Dunkelman), which will present an audiovisual event with original music in collaboration with Cornell DMA composers Seare Farhat, Matias de Roux, María Bulla, Michele Cheng, Laura Cetilia, Josh Biggs, Han Xu, and Miles Friday. “NOMON’s music combines drum machines, vocal samples, synth melodies, and modular synthesizers that intersect with carefully chosen percussion sounds, emphasizing the dance-like choreography of playing percussion.”

Going Big
The Deep Dive House Big Band continues its every-other-Wednesday residency under the direction of local jazz professor Greg Evans, who teaches at Ithaca College and Cornell University and plays drums with Rose and the Bros and other area bands. Laughing Matters
Comedian Nate Bargatze will bring “The Raincheck Tour” to Ithaca. The native of Tennessee is known for his podcast “Nateland,” which tackles “the meaningless issues that we face day to day to give listeners a much-needed mental break from fighting the good fight.” He also has appeared on most late-night talk shows, and in 2015 released his debut special “Full Time Magic” and debut album “Yelled at By a Clown,” followed more specials on Netflix. Guitar Troubadour
Habib Koité & Bamada will return to Central New York. A native of Mali who’s been compared to Eric Clapton and JJ Cale, the guitarist has drawn raves from Bonnie Raitt, who proclaimed, “first there was Hendrix, then Stevie Ray, and now Habib.” His latest release, “Kharifa,” was recorded entirely in Bamako. “The sound of Mali, its rich and diversified musical traditions, and its instruments permeate the music of this superb project. It can be said that the Malian guitarist has matured, evolved, while once again successfully keeping one foot firmly anchored in the past. The original compositions and covers that form the backbone of this new album reflect the griot’s open spirit, his willingness to travel through the rich Malian heritage while building the foundations of a resolutely modern music, also influenced by Western rock and folk.” Find out more here!
