Water Music
“steady state / transient flow is a sound and performance installation consisting of water-driven sound instruments created by John Eagle. The instruments, connected in one continuous water cycle, create a physical environment which determines the sonic behavior. Using pipes, tubing, valves, rocks, bottles, containers, and electronic sound components, the installation creates a variable water flow and produces an electroacoustic sound environment. The dynamics of the system, along with the interventions of performers at times, create different types of flow over time.” Eagle is joined by musicians Emily Call and Ford Fourqurean to perform with the installation throughout the week.
The installation is available to view in the Olive Tjaden Gallery inside Tjaden Hall on the Cornell Arts Quad. Short performances will occur daily at 12:30 pm and 4:30 p.m. except Tuesday, April 11, which will include a short performance at 12:30 p.m. and a longer performance at 5:30 p.m.

Sounds of Venice
NYS Baroque continues its 34th season with “Marcella/Marcello,” with concerts this weekend in Syracuse and Ithaca. “The title of the concert refers to the fact that the two composers represented on the program were husband and wife. Benedetto Marcello was a famous composer and musician in 18th-century Venice. He married his student Rosanna Scalfi, who was a gondola singer on the canals of Venice. As Benedetto was a nobleman, this marriage to a commoner had to be kept secret, and of course his family disapproved; after his death the marriage was declared null, and Scalfi was left penniless.
“Scalfi did publish one volume of cantatas for mezzo-soprano, her own voice range. It is conjectured that she also wrote her own texts. Our concert will feature a cantata and an aria by her. Benedetto wrote considerably more music than she did, and other pieces on the program, such as a cello sonata, some solo harpsichord music, a cantata for soprano, and two duet cantatas, will show off the incredible variety of his style. ‘Although both of our composers adhere mostly to the tuneful and beautiful traditional 18th century Italian musical style, there are some unexpected moments of almost crazy harmonic shifts, to surprise our listeners and make the music very dramatic,’ says NYS Baroque Artistic Director Deborah Fox. ‘So besides being an interesting love story, there is real musical magnetism.’”
The performers will include Laura Heimes, soprano; Shiba Nemat-Nasser, mezzo-soprano; Christopher Haritatos, cello; Andrus Madsen, harpsichord; and Deborah Fox, theorbo.
When & Where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, First Unitarian Universalist, 109 Waring Road, Syracuse; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, at First Unitarian Society, 306 North Aurora St., Ithaca.
