We close out May with some stellar shows, including the Gaslight Anthem at Beak and Skiff Apple Orchards in Lafayette and the Steve Morse Band in Homer, along with some cool events around Ithaca. A Howling Success
Deep Dive will host the Howl Studios Takeover, a one-day festival that will feature “a stage on the front patio, the back deck, and of course the main stage in the club! We will have reggae, pop, rock, ska, blues, country, metal, math rock, and jazz and feature: Mortal Combine, Circus Owl, Dart Brothers, The Amalgamators, Garlic Band, Crime Waves, Kitestring, and The Burrito Band open jazz jam.

The Big Sky Music Studio 2023 concert series will present the Soirree Louisana Dance Party. “We are excited to have our talented friends from Louisiana coming to play music and make amazing food for our community. It will be quite the party! Amazing dance music by Cajun all-stars Blake Miller, Kevin Wimmer, Jo Vidrine, and Colin Gould. A Louisiana dinner will be served with meats smoked here at Sweet Land Farm by Jo Vidrine, sold ala carte along with a gumbo made the day of the show.”

Myth Makers

That ’59 Sound
The Gaslight Anthem comes to Central New York to headline a triple bill that also includes Oso Oso and Emily Wolfe. “In 2022, The Gaslight Anthem returned to the stage for the first time in four years. Unlike those shows (which celebrated the ten-year anniversary of their breakthrough LP ‘The '59 Sound’), last year's tour explored every corner of the band's discography in festival and headline dates around the world. With the band working on new music for the first time in nearly a decade, these 2023 shows mark a new beginning for The Gaslight Anthem.” The band – Brian Fallon, Alex Rosamilia, Alex Levine, and Benny Horowitz – just released a new song, “Positive Charge.”

Local prog trio Strong Maybe concludes its second residency in downtown Ithaca, performing its “mostly improvised psychotic cartoon animal music” on Saturdays through May. The trio of Matt Saccuccimorano, Chad Lieberman, and Mark Wienand Karlsen will be joined by special guest Chris Corsanothis week. “What happens can never happen again,” the band promises.

Djug Django, Ithaca’s premier ensemble for gypsy swing, jazz standards, Latin rhythms and blues will be hosting an evening packed with music, all in honor of their late drummer, Al Hartland, who passed away from health complications. Proceeds from the event will go to his wife, Cindy Reid, to help pay for medical costs incurred by his condition. Annie Burns will be joining the ensemble for a few songs, renowned Ithaca artist Brian Keeler will be donating a painting for auction, and Barney Cole from Calf Audio will be doing all the sound for the show.”

Going Big
The Deep Dive House Big Band continues its every-other-Wednesday residency under the direction of local jazz professor Greg Evans, who teaches at Ithaca College and Cornell University and plays drums with Rose and the Bros and other area bands.
