Blues in the ‘Cuse
The New York State Blues Festival returns to Chevy Court at State Fairgrounds, offering three days of blues music at free admission. A variety of national and regional acts are performing, including Fillmore Blues Band, Brandon Santini, and Blood Brothers with Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia on Thursday; Los Blancos, Southern Avenue, and Annika Chambers & Paul DesLauriers on Friday; and Samantha Fish ft. Jesse Dayton, Jason Ricci & The Bad Kind, Earl Slick & The Ripcords, and Brownskin Band, with the legendary Buddy Guy closing out the festival as part of his “Damn Right Farewell” tour. On The Hill
South Hill Cider’s Community Concert Series continues with The Makers – the recently formed duo of Nate Silas Richardson and Lydia Garrison – and local singer-songwriter Pierce Walsh. The Makers will open with a set of their own, and then back Walsh for his set. “Pierce Walsh pulls mysterious melodic sounds from a deep place in the collective subconscious. A mix of haunting originals and hand-picked, reimagined covers, sung in a clear honest voice, that feels like a warm hug.”

All Abuzz
The Rena Guinn Acoustic Trio, which also features Joe Lule and Doug Henrie, will showcase tunes from the local singer-songwriter who draws on folk, old-style country, rock and roll, blues, and Americana influences. Getting It Started
The Downtown Ithaca Summer Concert Series kicks off its 2023 season with moxy-rockers Maddy Walsh and the Blind Spots, one of Ithaca’s most popular groups. They’re led by powerhouse singer Walsh, who’s backed by some of the area’s top players. The concert series runs through Sept. 14; see the full lineup here!

Keeping It Going
After the Blind Spots show, head down the Commons to Monks, where local rock-ska-jazz favorites ¡Viva Mayhem! will play an afterparty show. In The Groove
Deep Dive will host a multi-act bill headlined by Edge & Babi Lou, a Haitian-American duo hailing from Binghamton that blends “a multitude of genres such as Rap, R&B, Caribbean, Pop, and Rock into their own style. They have 4 LPs and a collection of singles out right now on all streaming platforms. They have 40+ live show experiences including showcases, festivals, concerts.”
They’ll be joined by Manila, “an eclectic act that features musicians from various backgrounds, taking elements from jazz, R&B, pop, and hip-hop in order to demonstrate a unique performance,” and The Supreme Soup, a Binghamton-bred hiphop artist who “has been living and breathing music his entire life.”

Funky Friday
Funky Lunch Fridays return to downtown Ithaca for its second year. “Join us every Friday at noon as we bring the finest selection of funk, disco, house, and classic hiphop to the Commons. Funky Lunch Fridays is a place for young and old alike...a place to meet with friends and get your weekend started right!” Utica’s DJ Ease-One will spin at this week’s edition.

Blurring Boundaries

The Analogue Sons return to South Hill Cider to showcase their predominantly original material while sprinkling in a few choice covers that blur the boundaries among reggae, jazz, dub, soul, rock, surf, and Eastern European music. The band includes Mike Stark (keyboards), Lars Burggren (drums), Aaron Speiser (dubs, melodica), Alicia Aubin (trombone), Lee Hamilton (sax), and Jason Shegogue (guitar). DJ Hill will open the night, and the band will be followed by DJ Mateo spinning vinyl at 8:30-10 p.m.

Southern Tier Blues
The Moe Town Concert Venue in Addison will an all-day blues festival featuring several area favorites, including Colin Aberdeen, Delta Mike Shaw, Ham Cannon, the East-West Blues Band, along with an All-Star Breakout. “If you like Blues then this is the place to be.” Free Camping and parking will be available.

Ready to Rock
Cortland-based classic rock favorites Tribal Revival will perform at this month’s edition of the Red Oak Music Series, an outdoor, family- friendly, free monthly music series hosted by The Lime Hollow Nature Center and the Center for the Arts of Homer running through September 2023. Performances and outdoor activities will take place at Lime Hollow’s education campus on Gracie Road.

Let’s Dance!
Big Sky Music Studio’s 2023 Concert Series continues with The Faux Paws, the trio of brothers Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand (Great Bear) and Chris Miller (The Revelers).
“From raging fiddle tunes, to saxophone solos and unrequited love songs, the music of The Faux Paws would be hard to pin down with standard genre descriptions. The trio’s contagious groove, and feel-good melting pot folk music has been honed over ten years of playing together, and is the sound of three close friends (two of which happen to be brothers), who feel a musical kinship that transcends any stylistic limitations. The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts will present the Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo. “Valerie and Benedict Turner are ambassadors of Country Blues music and the Piedmont style of fingerpicking. Their mission is to help bring awareness to this unique aspect of African-American culture, and to the contributions of early blues artists, through performing and teaching.”
“A Piedmont Blūz concert isn’t just music – it’s an experience as they transport you back to the 1920s and 1930s, the heyday of acoustic Country Blues music. In addition to performing songs from that time frame, they introduce each piece with an interesting anecdote about either the composer, the time period, or the song itself.”

Brothers in Arms
Catskill-based favorites The Felice Brothers return to Central New York. “A folk-Americana-rock-country band with deep roots in varied genres, The Felice Brothers are lauded as ‘musician’s musicians’ and poets.” The current lineup includes Ian and James Felice along with bassist Jesske Hume (Conor Oberst, Jade Bird) and drummer Will Lawrence. Their latest album is 2021’s “From Dreams to Dust.”

Father’s Day Fun
The recently opened Cedarwood Event Venue will kick off its inaugural Sunday Summer series with a Father's Day event. “Each week we will have rotating bands and activities. We'll always have cornhole and a spectacular bar with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.” This week will feature Madd Daddy, the father-daughter duo of Maddy Walsh and Ted Walsh, along with mini golf from CNY Attractions and pizza from Stone Bend Farm. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available; no outside food or beverages allowed. Space is limited and tickets are required.

South Hill Cider’s Monday Night Jazz series continues this week with MAQ, a quartet that performs everything from classic and modern jazz to Brazilian bossa and folk music. The lineup includes Eric Aceto (violin), Harry Aceto (bass), Doug Robinson (guitar, vocals), Chad Lieberman (accordion), and Steve Pond (percussion). MAQ plays the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month.

Angelo Paradiso (Big Mean Sound Machine, New Planets, Living Myths) continues Sound Pressure Monday,” his weekly residency at Deep Dive.

High above Cayuga’s Waters
Rap legend Afroman comes to Ithaca, ready to drop his trademark hits such as his 2000’s single "Because I Got High" and 2001’s single "Crazy Rap." (Both songs were featured on his album 2001 “The Good Times.”) Born Joseph Edgar Foreman, the 48-year-old Mississippi native is not only a rapper, but also singer, songwriter, political candidate, and comedian. His latest releases are 2022’s “Lemon Pound Cake” and 2023’s “Famous Player.” And he has announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential race!
Opening the show are Syracuse’s The Frank White Experience: Tribute to Notorious B.I.G and the recently formed local collective 607-SoS.

Your hosts for the night, Mike Stewart and Andre ‘Pnut’ Williams, promise to keep your spirits afloat with their unique styles. Four on the Floor
The Paul Merrill Quartet will bring its top-shelf jazz to downtown Ithaca. “Trumpeter, composer, and band leader Paul Merrill is a proud member of the Upstate New York music scene. He toured internationally with Phil Woods and Half Pint and nationally with John Brown’s Body. Merrill performs locally with the fusion trio Electrolyte, the CNY Jazz Orchestra, the Salt City Jazz Collective, Plan Z, the Mactet, and Jeff Stockham’s Jazz Horn Legacy Sextet. He has backed up vocalists such as Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Freda Payne, and Frank Sinatra Jr., and performed with Delfeayo Marsalis, Javon Jackson, and Johnny Griffin on the festival stage.
