Bard Rock

The Cherry Arts presents “As You Like It,” its first-ever Shakespeare production.

“The crew is in trouble — so they're putting on disguises, marching into the forest, and not coming out until everyone's married! As You Like It is a cheeky and adventurous comedy full of passionate lovers, nefarious schemes, and ridiculous disguises. It's also Shakespeare’s most musical play, and some of Ithaca’s most beloved musicians have written sweet new tunes to bring Shakespeare's songs to life.”

“The play is chock full of songs —which will be written by some of Ithaca’s most iconic songwriters including Jennie Lowe Stearns, Nate Silas Richardson (of the Sim Redmond Band), and Maddy Walsh (of The Blind Spots).” Other contributing local songwriters include Mandy Goldman, Evan Friedell, and Samuel B. Lupowitz.

When: runs through Sunday

Where: The Cherry Artspace

Cost: $10-$55, depending on the performance date; tickets are available online here

American Music

Miss Tess returns to Ithaca to play South Hill Cider’s Golden Hour Music Series. “When most people think of defiant music, they think of punk rock or outlaw country. But defying genres while transcending eras and resisting clichés is hard to pin down when it comes to artistry—unless you’re talking about Miss Tess. Swinging for the fences and from the branches of jazz, country, blues and old school rock and roll, she has employed all of her influences and talents on a tour-de-force, while cleverly taking standard perspectives and ideas, like the definition of a love song, to task. After over a decade on the road, now making her home in Nashville — by way of Baltimore, Boston, and Brooklyn — Miss Tess has found a creative community that encourages and embraces wide artistic exploration and expression as much as she does.”

When: 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday

Where: South Hill Cider

Cost: $10

Waking April
Waking April

Two in Tandem

Deep Dive hosts a happy hour show with Waking April and Kompyootur Muhsheen.

Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Waking April has released a string of singles and EPs, played shows across the United States, been profiled in American Songwriter, and been interviewed on CBS's My Carolina. “Spend enough time with Waking April and the world gets more zen and more ballistic at the same time. Their songs play with the rules and boundaries of Pop, Rock, Dance, and Electronica while inviting you to clap your hands, shake your ass, and, every once in a while, cry. That's what happens when you combine synth queen, songwriter, and vocalist Bethany McKee's Rock-fairy vibes with synth maniac, songwriter, and guitarist Alex McKee's fidget-frantic electricity.”

Kompootur Muhsheen: Teenage Algorithm is a “mild-mannered middle management cyborg that manufactures synthetic harmonics and psycho-sonic biological upgrades.”

Arun Ramamurthy and Trina Basu
Arun Ramamurthy and Trina Basu

String Thing

Big Sky Music Studio Summer Concert Series continues with violinists Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy, who “reimagine the potential of string chamber music with a unique sound both deeply intimate and cinematically expansive. Rooted in traditions of South Indian classical music, Western chamber music, and jazz, the duo is uniquely positioned to create a sound that feels ancient, orchestral, and contemporary or as The New Yorker put it “free-flowing and globe-spanning.” Combined with the duo’s fluency in improvisation, there is a clear architecture to their sound that still gives space for the two violins to be delightfully indiscernible and shine individually. Their debut album, ‘Nakshatra,’ the Sanskrit word for constellation, is a profound exploration of this dance between a collective and singular sound, bursting with energy, playfulness, and a cosmic gravitas.

“As a duo they have been artists-in-residence at Avaloch Farm Music Institute and Next Stage Arts Project, and have performed at Ragas Live Festival, The Jazz Gallery, Bang on a Can, Benque Cultural Center, Sri Ramanjaneya Sangeetha Sabha, and Lyric Chamber Society of NY. Varying colors, shapes, and sounds emerge from the ensemble with their esteemed collaborators, who have included cellists Marika Hughes and Jake Charkey, percussionists Dan Kurfirst and Rich Stein, bassists Damon Banks and Rashaan Carter and guitarist Shane Parish. Basu and Ramamurthy are married and live in Brooklyn, NY with their two young children.”
