Cutting Edge
Theoretical Events presents Cindy Lee, Freak Heat Waves, and Microbes, Mostly!
“For Patrick Flegel, Cindy Lee is more than just a recording music project. ‘Singers like Patsy Cline and The Supremes carried me through the hardest times of my life,’ explains Flegel, ‘and also provided the soundtrack to the best times.’ Following the dissolution of Canadian experimental indie band Women, Flegel would delve deeper into songwriting that bends further toward high atmospherics and bracing melodies – a unique space where splendor naturally collides with experimentation. Delivering moments of sheer beauty through somber reflections on longing and loneliness, Cindy Lee is something to hold onto in a world of disorder. ‘What's Tonight To Eternity,’ Cindy Lee's fifth long-form offering, showcases the project's most entrancing strengths: ethereal snowdrift pop and sly nods toward classic girl-group motifs.”
Hailing from British Columbia, Freak Heat Waves is touring to promote their latest album, “Mondo Tempo,” which features a guest vocal by Cindy Lee on “A Moment Divine.”
Local garage-rockers Microbes, Mostly recently released their latest album, “Bones for Broth.”

Hawai’ian Love
Deep Dive will host a cool double bill featuring Hawai’i-based band Mike Love and Full Circle along with Brooklyn-based SunDub.
“Mike Love is a musician devoted to revolution through sound. Born in O’ahu, Hawai’i to a family of musicians, Mike has used music as a conversation for as long as he can remember. He comes from a unique convergence of influences, yet all are bound by their common ambition to inspire positive change in the world. Love releases his music independently on his own Love Not War Records label, and his sound, while rooted in the spirituality and message-based music of roots reggae, fuses a variety of influences including progressive and classic rock, soul, blues, flamenco, jazz, classical, and more.
Love’s solo shows are an internationally recognized one-man-band showcase, using complex looping techniques, multiple instruments and an array of different vocal and musical styles. His songs possess wisdom and seek to instill change; they are about being conscious and mindful as human beings living among so many other life forms on this beautiful planet. For Mike, music is a form of healing, learning, and growing.”

“SunDub is a testament to the power of inclusion, diversity and unity— their music and community rallies around the concept that we are strongest when people of different backgrounds can work together to create positive change. These core values are showcased on SunDub’s first release, ‘Burden of Love,’ which has since amassed millions of streams and whet the appetites of listeners around the world for their next release. In a world that is dominated by watered-down distillation of reggae, SunDub aims to honor the roots of Jamaican music while offering their unique ability to combine soul and funk sophistication into their art.” The band’s latest release is “Spirits Eat Music,” which features the single “New Ways To Love,” featuring Grammy Award-winning vocalist Peetah Morgan (of Morgan Heritage).
