Crossing the Border
Big Sky Music Studio will host Canadian singer-songwriter Abigail Lapell for a solo show. “We had so much fun hosting shows this summer, that we decided to get a few special acts to the farm over the winter months. We are thrilled to have Abigail Lapell come to sing and play for us - she is an incredible musician and unusual songwriter.”
This was written of her latest album, “Stolen Time”: “A disc of pure, impalpable beauty, weightless notes and melodies that pierce our hearts…. And the young woman, prey to a vagueness in the soul that she sublimates in a handful of magical songs, to offer us a twilight album, somewhere between Gillian Welch and Laura Veirs.” – Rolling Stone
When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Where: Big Sky Music Studio
Sweet Land Farm CSA
Cost: $15, available online here

Historical Sounds
The Cornell Department of Music presents two concerts featuring instruments from the historical keyboard collection and music by female composers. At 7 p.m. Thursday in Barnes Hall, doctoral student Cheryl Tan performs “A soirée musicale: Clara Schumann’s Opus 6, Fanny Mendelssohn, and Frédéric Chopin” on the 1843 Pleyel and 1823 Graf pianos. In 1836, Clara Wieck-Schumann (1819-1896) published her Soirées musicales Op. 6. This set of six pieces is comprised of a toccatina, nocturne, ballade, polonaise, and two mazurkas — genres that were popularized and cultivated during the time, particularly in salons. In this recital, Tan pairs Schumann’s compositions with works by two composers she was closely acquainted with and mutually inspired by: Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847) and Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849). Mendelssohn offers alternate glimpses into the genres of the Nocturne and Toccata; Chopin, the Mazurka and Ballade.
When: 7 p.m. Thursday

Then at 5 p.m. Friday at the A.D. White House, the final Cornell Center for Historical Keyboards Salon of the semester takes place. Guest pianist Patricia García Gil from the University of North Carolina Greensboro presents the latest research on the late 18th-century Viennese composer Marianna Martines’ Keyboard Sonatas utilizing two of Cornell’s late 18th-century-style fortepianos, the Silbermann and Schantz.

Folk Roots
Folk legend Chris Smither returns to Ithaca for a show at the Hangar Theatre, with an opening set from The Suitcase Junket.
“Having distilled his own signature sound of blues and folk for over 50 years, Chris Smither is truly an American original. A profound songwriter, Chris continues to draw deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and philosophers. From his early days as the New Orleans transplant in the Boston folk scene, through his wilderness years, to his reemergence in the 1990s as one of America’s most distinctive acoustic performers, Chris Smither continues to hone his distinctive sound. He has always traveled his own road and stayed true to his musical vision. He may be best known for writing ‘Love You Like A Man,’ which Bonnie Raitt and, more recently, jazz great Diana Krall have covered. His music has been covered by numerous artists and featured in soundtrack albums, independent film, television, and commercials. Reviewers continue to praise his dazzling guitar work, gravelly voice and songwriting.”
“Matt Lorenz's vision, manifest in The Suitcase Junket, developed in the tension between the grand and the solitary. Grand in its imagery, sound, and staging. Solitary in its thrift and self-reliance. What instruments he requires, Lorenz builds from scratch and salvage. What parts five players would perform, he performs alone. The spectacle of his one-man set bears constant comparison to legends of showmanship, brilliance, madness, and invention.”
When: 8 p.m. Thursday
Where: Hangar Theatre
Cost: $30, available online here

Krewe-zing to Ithaca
Formed in 2005 and hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, Toubab Krewe is an “instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound…Toubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita, no doubt picked up during the group's travels to study and live in Guinea, Ivory Coast and Mali. But what truly differentiates Toubab Krewe from other Statesiders inspired by African music is how they innovate on what they've learned instead of simply recreating tradition. Toubab Krewe carves out a new trail honoring the African originators they admire by making something alive and contemporary.”
Ithaca’s own Dom Martyr – the synth-based project of Angelo Paradiso and Alicia Aubin – will open the show.
When: 9 p.m. Thursday
Where: Deep Dive
Cost: $19 in advance, available online here; day of show, $25_

Five Years of Fishes
Trumansburg-based rockers Vicious Fishes will mark the five-year anniversary of their album, “Songs from the Swamp,” joined by special guests Overhand Sam & Bad Weapon from Rochester and Ithaca’s Little Slicer. The show will include a Vicious Fishes double set including “Songs from the Swamp” front to back and the breadth of their catalog since the band’s start in 2018.
“Formed in their junior and senior years, some 8 months before their debut release, Vicious Fishes is Jakob Gould (bass), Liam McDonnell (vocals and guitar), Jonas Puryear (lead guitar), and Zeb Whitford (drums). Released November 23, 2017, ‘Songs from the Swamp,’ is a punk introduction to a band of high school friends. The EP is young and sparing, odes and mantras, nobody’s fool but still wondering - were all those promises just a conceit?” Since then, Vicious Fishes have released two albums; most recently, in March 2023, they shared the EP “All the Time.”
Overhand Sam & Bad Weapon: An impressive melding of classic song structure of the 60’s with a sound that ranges from cinematic to nearly violent, Overhand Sam & Bad Weapon are a force to be reckoned with… With songs investigating the beautiful subtleties of life, the poetic lyrics are met with a fury of sound led by Sam’s unique upside-down guitar styling, reminiscent of Mahavishnu Orchestra’s John McLaughlin & even Jimi Hendrix.”
Little Slicer: “Based around the music of Wallace Petruziello, Little Slicer performs songs written about the everyday experience of being human, unafraid to take from the 90s indie playbook.”
When: 8 p.m. Friday
Where: Deep Dive
Cost: $9 in advance, available online here; $15 day of show

Escape Artist
Aubrey Haddard returns to make her debut at the Range, with an opening set from Hollings, the dream-rock/experimental project of Ithaca-based Hayden Eager.
“Aubrey Haddard is a self-proclaimed escape artist. When the tides change and personal growth calls for emotional upheaval, Aubrey seeks refuge in her creative discipline. Carving out a boundary-less space to explore the mysteries of the human experience and the vastness of the physical world, she creates a sonic landscape that is both epic and deeply personal. Dreamy synthscapes, overdriven guitars and pulsing electronic drums lay the foundation for Haddard’s vocals, heralded by critics as ‘harrowingly beautiful’ (Clash Magazine) and ‘herculean’ (The Line of Best Fit). Calling upon the inspirations of powerhouse PJ Harvey and dance music giant LCD Soundsystem alike, Haddard blends the analog and the digital with eccentricity. Themes of Greek mythology and Japanese literature weave their way through her stories, inviting listeners to peek into her subconscious and share in the escape.”
