Petite League
Petite League

Little & Petite

Petite League comes to Ithaca.

“Living together in famed Syracuse house venue Scarier Dome hosting shows for touring bands, producing live video sessions, starting a screen printing business while also learning the ins-and-outs of self-recording and releasing records was the foundational stepping stone upon which Petite League was created. Lorenzo Gillis Cook, songwriter and composer, along with drummer Henry Schoonmaker, came out of the gates swinging with their signature infectious lo-fi power pop releasing their two first records before graduating from college that same year. Petite League’s melodic sun kissed brand of indie rock started the buzz right away with some immediate industry, streaming, and publication recognition which helped propel the band forward from the jump. The band continued to shape itself into a staple of the New York indie rock scene as the band moved to Queens in 2016 enlisting the help of other ex-Scarier Dome residents Adam Greenberg and Kevin McCallum as part of the live band. The DIY mindset of operating Scarier Dome is still the backbone of what Petite League runs on to this day as they continue to release music prolifically, cultivate their online presence, and tour throughout the United States.”

Little Slicer will open the show. “Based around the music of Wallace Petruziello, Little Slicer performs songs written about the everyday experience of being human, unafraid to take from the 90s indie playbook.”

When: 9 p.m. Friday

Where: Deep Dive

Cost: $15

Dashing Debut

Rochester’s Eli Flynn & The Everymen will make their Ithaca debut at the Range.

“Audiences are well acquainted with Eli Flynn as a current member of the bands Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Upward Groove, and The Able Bodies, and on the stylistically diverse “Running With Scissors” — his debut solo album —there’s never a dull moment. “Easier” demonstrates Flynn’s prowess as a rock vocalist as he snarls his way through the melody with a limber range and soulful swagger that recalls the aplomb of Gavin DeGraw on his 2003 breakthrough album “Chariot” “Every Word Is a Mountain” borrows from The Able Bodies playbook of danceable ’90s pop that grooves, but mixed metaphors about “my love in a sling” and “broken logic hanging from a silver chair” distract from the song’s natural charms. Flynn’s words regain focus on the very next track. “There was a time in the beginning when devotion kept me spinning but that time is past,” he sings with calm wisdom on “Hell in a Handbasket.” Slide guitar and a Fender Rhodes organ sound meld over a loping tempo that flows like a lazy river: “Have you ever met your demons, took their advice without reason? Well I have.” Throughout the record, occasional wisps of soul and funk refresh the natural charm of Flynn’s charismatic tunes. The music was entrusted to sound engineers Lincoln All and Aaron Lipp, whose supervision of mixing and mastering, respectively, gives the album its polish.” —DANIEL J. KUSHNER, CITY Magazine

Saturday Songs

Jennie Lowe returns to South Hill Cider's tasting room to showcase her distinctive original songs that feature pensive lyrics and captivating vocals.

"What strikes at first is Jennie's carefully laid - almost naked - vocals on a gorgeous reverb. A genuine instrument that goes from whispering to declamation, almost like calligraphic technique, striped, powerful and fragile at the same time. A splendor that perfectly conveys the rainbow of emotions embedded in these songs: trust, distrust, abandonment, hope, envy, fear and disappointment, love - and its absence."
