Rubblebucket makes its State Theatre debut, guitar legend Adrian Legg comes to Trumansburg, Erica Dawn Lyle plays Sacred Root Kava Bar, and KISS founding member Ace Frehley visits The L in Horseheads. Also, Bruce Cockburn and Blackmore’s Knight play sold-out shows in Ithaca and Homer, respectively, on Saturday night, and there are a bunch of Halloween-themed shows in the coming days!

Getting in the Groove
South Hill Cider’s Golden Hour Music Series continues with the return of the Analogue Sons, the local group comprising Mike Stark (keyboards), Lars Burggren (drums), Aaron Speiser (dubs, melodica), Alicia Aubin (trombone), Lee Hamilton (sax), and Jason Shegogue (guitar). “Showcasing their predominantly original material while sprinkling in a few choice covers that blur the boundaries among reggae, jazz, dub, soul, rock, surf, and Eastern European music.”

Ghosts & Monsters
The Cornell Department of Music and Ensemble X present a concert titled “Ghosts and Monsters” just in time for Halloween.
“The performance will include George Crumb's Black Angels for electric string quartet and HK Gruber's Frankenstein!! a pan-demonium for baritone chansonnier and ensemble. Gruber utilizes children’s poems by H.C. Artmann as the text for his piece, which combines traditional orchestral sounds and idioms with newer popular styles and toy instruments. Michael Truesdell leads the ensemble as chansonnier. Crumb’s work Black Angels (Thirteen Images from the Dark Land) was completed in 1970 and inscribed “In the Time of War,” referring to the influences of the Vietnam era on the musical sounds. In addition to the electric string quartet, the performers also utilize unusual instruments, including wine glasses and tam-tams.”

Fiery Fingers
Legendary guitarist Adrian Legg will perform at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts.

Underground Sounds
Ithaca Underground will host another cool show, this one headlined by a solo set by former Bikini Kill touring guitarist Erica Dawn Lyle. BlackisMyGender, Jen Kutler, and Skip Tracer will round out the bill.
“Erica Dawn Lyle is a writer, curator, experimental musician, and cultural instigator who lives in New York and Florida. Called ‘a punk rock hero’ by Pitchfork, Lyle has played in over a dozen bands and on over forty records since 1991 and is the former touring guitar player for Bikini Kill. As a solo performer, Lyle has released musical collaborations with Kim Gordon, The Raincoats, Bernadette Mayer, Kathleen Hanna, Satomi Matsuzaki, Brontez Purnell, and many more. Record Crates United calls her debut solo record, ‘Greatest Hits,’ ‘perhaps the most daring and explosive solo guitar release of 2022.’
The author of several books and a contributor to Artforum, Art in America, Frieze, and other publications, her most recent book is “The Knight of Cups” (Beladonna Press, 2023). Her latest album is “SYMPOIESIS.”
Jen Kutler “is a multidisciplinary artist and performer. She modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments.”

Disco Dance
“Deep Dive Discoween” will feature local favorites The Comb Down performing “A Once in a Lifetime Disco Revival” set. Led by Brian “Gourd” Mlodzinski (aka djGOURD), the band includes some of Ithaca’s top players, including drummer Ashley Ickes, bassist Andrew Battles, keyboardist Jon Petronzio, horn players TJ Schaper and Jack Storer, and percussionist Bryan Davis.
The Marcus Rezak Guitar Head Band is also on the bill.
“Marcus Rezak carves out a distinguished style in the world of guitar with several cutting-edge groups such as Shred is Dead, Digital Tape Machine, Stratosphere All-Stars, Katharsis, Supernatural Beings in addition to frequent engagements as an artist-at-large.
“Known as a master of jazz improvisation and a seasoned artist of the sit-in, Rezak is a frequent call among bands and musicians. Rezak’s 2018 debut as a bandleader saw him collaborating alongside Robby Kreiger of The Doors, Felix Pastorius, Melvin Seals of Jerry Garcia Band, Scott Page of Pink Floyd, Russ Lawton/Ray Paczkowsi/Tony Markellis of Trey Anastasio Band, Jay Lane of Dead and Company, Eric Lawrence of Little Feat, Kris Myers and Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s McGee, Ike Willis and Arthur Barrow of Frank Zappa’s band, and legendary saxophonist Bill Evans. Since then he has toured across the US with eclectic lineups featuring the likes of Adrian Tramontano, Chris DeAngelis, Dave Watts of The Motet , Wally Ingram, and more; led his band through two tours on the US Virgin Islands; spearheaded official Umphrey’s McGee afterparties, and continued to hone his chops in his home studio and licensing endeavors.”
His latest album is “Truth in Sound,” which features members of the Trey Anastasio Band, percussionist Kaylan Pathak, and others; he has a new album set for release this fall.

The Big Stage
Synth-pop favorites Rubblebucket return to Ithaca for their first show at the State Theatre. Founded in 200y and still led by founding members Kalmia Traver and Alex Tōth, the band just released a new single, “Teardrops,” which features a rare lead vocal by Tōth. That follows the band’s sixth full-length album, 2022’s “Earth Worship,” on which the duo drew on its longtime interest in sustainability and community development.
Dante Elephante, a Los Angeles-based band led by Ruben Zarate, will open the show.

Disco Inferno

Hoosier Heat

Horns a’Plenty
The Fall Creek Brass Band returns to the Range for a special Halloween show.
“Ithaca’s favorite powerhouse brass band! FCBB fuses the sound of New Orleans street music with funk, jazz, pop, and rock-and-roll. Voted best local band in the 2020 Ithaca Times Readers Poll, FCBB performs original tunes, New Orleans classics, and brassy arrangements of your favorite pop songs. With a sizable collective of trumpets, trombones, saxes, drums, and a big green sousaphone, the Fall Creek Brass Band always attracts a crowd and gets everybody’s feet moving.
Originally formed at Dryden High School over a decade ago, FCBB experienced a recent rebirth, recruiting the talent of funk masters all around the Ithaca area. The Spaceman Cometh
Legendary guitarist Ace Frehley returns to Central New York, just in time for Halloween. The founding lead guitarist of KISS, Frehley has released four solo albums in the past nine years. His two “Origins” albums pay tribute to some of his musical heroes, while 2018’s “Spaceman” harkens back to his acclaimed self-titled 1978 album, which included “New York Groove.” And his live sets always include some KISS classics, such as “Love Gun,” “Cold Gin,” “Deuce,” “Detroit Rock City,” and more.
