Woods Songs
Over the last few years, Jessie Gray has distinguished herself as one of Ithaca’s most promising singer-songwriters. Her 2019 solo debut, “Through the Woods,” was one of Ithaca’s top releases of the year, spotlighting her ability to blend earthy, homespun lyrics with sparse instrumentation and haunting vocals to create intriguing narratives that draw in the listener.
Blending folk, country, and blues influences, Gray’s recent material shows continued growth, with her winsome voice showing both strength and vulnerability over her propulsive acoustic guitar grooves. And her take on Patsy Cline’s standard “Walkin’ After Midnight,” with its sinuous phrasing, shows her ability to put a unique stamp on a classic tune.
Gray has an energetic stage presence, both as a solo artist and with the powerhouse all-female quartet Honey Cave (now defunct, unfortunately), where she more than held her own among some of Ithaca’s most dynamic performers. Lately, she’s been sharing the stage with another talented local, Lydia Garrison (Home Remedy, The Turtle Duhks), but she’s more than capable of drawing and holding an audience all by herself.

Together they perform, improvise, groove, distort and fuse Pan-American folk music and Euro art-rock with sensibilities from around the globe. Listeners are just as likely to hear imaginative renditions of Margret Bonds’ art songs and tunes by Ornette Coleman as they are to hear covers from British-Bahrainian composer Yazz Ahmed and folk music from Armenia or Denmark.
